The Risk of Vincible Ignorance in Pure Presuppositionalism

Presuppositionalism, particularly in its Van Tillian form, argues that all reasoning begins with a foundational commitment—a "presupposition." It asserts that one must start with the existence of the God of Scripture as the necessary precondition for logic, science, and morality. While this provides a robust internal framework for the believer, a rigid application of Presuppositionalism without Evidentialism risks creating a closed epistemic loop. This loop can lead to vincible ignorance: a state where a person remains ignorant of truths they could and should know because they have intentionally or unintentionally neglected the available evidence.

The Nature of the Epistemic Loop

Presuppositionalism operates on the "transcendental argument," which suggests that without the Christian worldview, "you can’t prove anything." It effectively treats evidence as secondary to the framework. If the framework is the only thing that validates the evidence, then any evidence that contradicts or complicates one’s interpretation of that framework is often dismissed as "neutrality," which the presuppositionalist rejects as a myth.

This creates a psychological barrier to new information. When a believer insists that they already possess the "ultimate starting point," they may stop looking at the world with curiosity. Vincible ignorance occurs here because the ignorance is "conquerable" (vincible). The information is available in the natural world—what theologians call General Revelation—but the individual refuses to engage with it because they deem it unnecessary or "spiritually compromised."

The Dismissal of General Revelation

The danger of ignoring Evidentialism—the use of historical, archeological, and scientific data to support faith—is that it inadvertently devalues the world God created. Evidentialism relies on the idea that "God’s invisible qualities... have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made" (Romans 1:20).

If a presuppositionalist becomes so focused on the precondition of knowledge that they ignore the content of the world, they fall into a form of intellectual insulation. For example:

  • Scientific Discovery: A pure presuppositionalist might dismiss nuanced carbon dating or genomic data simply because it is presented by "non-believing" scientists, without engaging the actual mechanics of the evidence.

  • Historical Context: They might ignore the cultural milieu of the ancient Near East, believing that their presupposition alone is sufficient to interpret a text, leading to historical inaccuracies.

In these cases, ignorance is not a lack of access to truth, but a refusal to utilize the "tools of evidence" God has provided in the natural realm.

The Need for a "Both/And" Approach

Evidentialism acts as a necessary check on the subjectivity that can creep into presuppositional thought. Without evidence, a presuppositionalist has no way to distinguish their "starting point" from that of a radical skeptic or a believer in a different deity, other than by asserting that their own view is "self-attesting."

While the presuppositionalist is right that no one is truly "neutral," the evidentialist is right that God has left "tracks" in history. By integrating the two, we avoid vincible ignorance through holistic epistemology:

Vincible ignorance is often viewed as a moral failing because it involves a choice to remain in the dark. If we believe that "all truth is God's truth," then we have a mandate to engage with evidence.

A Presuppositionalism that rejects Evidentialism becomes a fortress rather than a lighthouse. It protects the believer from doubt, but it also prevents them from learning how God has worked through history and biology. To avoid vincible ignorance, one must accept that while the Word is the final authority, the World is a valid testimony. We must be willing to let evidence sharpen our understanding of our presuppositions, ensuring our faith is not just a philosophical placeholder, but a living engagement with reality.
