Epigenetics and the EES explains macro evolution better than NeoDarwinism

Epigenetic changes and the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES) are two relatively new theories that have the potential to explain macroevolution better than Neo-Darwinism.

Neo-Darwinism is the prevailing theory of evolution, which states that evolution occurs through the process of natural selection, acting on genetic variation. However, Neo-Darwinism has difficulty explaining some aspects of macroevolution, such as the evolution of new traits and the rapid diversification of species.

Epigenetic changes are changes in gene expression that are not caused by changes in the DNA sequence. These changes can be inherited, and they can have a significant impact on the phenotype of an organism. For example, epigenetic changes have been linked to the development of cancer, as well as to the effects of environmental factors on gene expression.

The EES is a newer theory that incorporates epigenetic changes outside of the traditional Neo-Darwinian model. The EES proposes that epigenetic changes can act as a kind of "heritable memory" that can be passed down from generation to generation. This can allow for the rapid evolution of new traits, even in the absence of large-scale genetic changes.

There is still much that we do not know about epigenetics and the EES, but these theories offer a promising new way to understand macroevolution. Studies have shown that epigenetic changes can play a role in the evolution of a variety of traits, including body size, lifespan, and resistance to disease.

In addition, the EES provides a way to explain how environmental factors can influence evolution. For example, studies have shown that the stress of climate change can induce epigenetic changes that can lead to the evolution of new traits.

Overall, epigenetic changes and the EES offer a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of macroevolution than Neo-Darwinism. These theories are still under development, but they have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of how evolution works.
