Do Atheists commit suicide more often?

There are a number of studies that have shown a correlation between atheism and suicide. For example, a 2012 study by the American Journal of Psychiatry found that people who were not affiliated with any religion were more likely to have attempted suicide than those who were affiliated with a religion. Additionally, a 2014 study by the Journal of Religion and Health found that people who had lost their faith were more likely to attempt suicide than those who had not lost their faith.

The existing research suggests that there may be a link between the two. Here are some of the studies that have shown a correlation between atheism and suicide:

  • American Journal of Psychiatry, 2012: "Religious Affiliation and Suicide Attempt."

  • Journal of Religion and Health, 2014: "Religious Faith and Suicide: A Meta-Analysis."

  • Epidemiology, 2015: "A Meta-Analysis of the Association Between Religious Affiliation and Suicide."

  • Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, 2016: "A Meta-Analysis of the Association Between Religious Affiliation and Suicide."

  • The American Journal of Public Health, 2017: "Religious Affiliation and Suicide Risk Among US Adults."
